About Us
I grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa, attended a junior college for two years and then received my bachelor’s degree in Leisure Services from Iowa State University. Like many individuals, I followed the “go to school, work hard, and get a good job” line of thinking. For many years I supported my family by that method.
My first job after college was in Ohio working for a county parks and recreation department for almost two years. I had an opportunity to return to Iowa and worked in a city parks and recreation department for the next 11-½ years. During that time I married and was blessed with three daughters.
I moved to the private sector into operations and relationship management positions for the same company, (which went through 3 name changes), for the next 18 ½ years. During the last 12 years I managed inbound call center departments. During those years the company went through various downsizing initiatives. In July 2006, a few months short of my 55th birthday, I was downsized along with 3,000 others across the country.
Initially I thought it would be easy to find another position – I knew a number of people who I previously worked with who had relocated to other companies. However, if you have ever “been there”, you would probably agree that it’s not easy. I was either “over qualified,” competing with internal candidates, not specialized enough, etc, etc. Thus, my wife began working part-time at a local hospital to secure health insurance benefits for us. Previous to that time, she had always worked from home while raising our three daughters.
A few months before I was downsized, we became involved in a network marketing opportunity. I began reading numerous motivational and positive thinking type books, listened to many CD’s, and became more involved in building that business. At the same time I started using other skills, and by word of mouth advertising, started taking on handyman/landscape projects to contribute to supporting my family. For almost two years we faithfully attended the local network marketing meetings, went to some regional and national conventions, purchased product on a regular basis, and talked to people I knew and a large number I did not. I learned a lot, I changed my ability to start conversations with people I didn’t know, however, we really didn’t make any money. Thus, after two years, we stopped working the program. We now look for opportunities without the weekly “hotel” meetings and ones where you don’t need to buy a bunch of products each month.
Before we stopped working the above program in early 2008, I did some extensive research on the Internet and found information from a number of sources that confirmed that we were not alone in what we were experiencing. These individuals showed how to use the Internet as a way of having interested individuals find us instead of us chasing after them. From one of these sources, my wife and I signed up to attend a weekend conference in Atlanta and then began a coaching program on this new way of building a business. Part of the methodology to do this was to create a site from which we could blog and write articles. I started writing articles so people could begin to find me.
I will regress a bit and tell you that exactly one year after I was downsized, Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through the next year, together we handled surgery, chemo and radiation. The cancer was caught early, the surgery was successful and the treatments were additional precautions to prevent a recurrence. Sue continues to be blessed with good reports from her doctors.
Currently my wife and I are continuing to expand our base in Internet programs. Sue still works part-time at the hospital and I continue with my handyman projects. Our goal is to help others understand there are many options available and you don’t need to feel stuck in a position that you may or may not like. Home-based business opportunities offer more than additional income opportunities. They also offer tax savings that may more than cover your business expenses. In addition, they also allow you to have choices for you and your family. Many individuals are seeking additional flexibility to spend time with their family and to supplement existing jobs in this current economy. We are here to help you succeed with your home-based business – just let us know how we can assist. We look forward to helping you create your own success.
